Tower defense games have been popular for some time that a new title would pop-up every now and then. Released in 2015 by R2 games, Heroes of the Banner has become one of the most addictive titles to date. The game was initially introduced on Facebook but was later moved to its own website.
Heroes of the Banner, while not that different from a standard tower defense game provides a combination of RTS and RPG game play. It also has a multi-player challenge mode where online players can go one-on-one with each other on an arena-like battlefield using their group of heroes pitted against each other.
As an RPG, the game has a storyline based on Norse legends. Apparently Loki the god of mischief has plunged the world once again into chaos. Challenging the gods, he has set the darkness of the Fimbulwinter while ordering his evil minions to attack and lay waste to mankind. The goddess Freya takes it upon herself to stand in his way and appoints and endows you, a great warrior, as guardian and protector of the meek and innocent during these very troubled times.
The game starts you with a map with a single tower along a path to a village which Loki’s henchmen will take to attack. You will have to recruit a hero to fight for you and man that tower. As the game progresses, you will be able to hire multiple heroes each manning a tower which you can place along specific points on the map to strategically block the waves of incoming attackers from Loki’s side. This is where the game gets to be immersive and addictive. The heroes you assign to the towers have specific characteristics or skills they use to defend the village against the enemy horde passing by.
You will have to recruit them from the tavern as they are looking for work. There are 3 main warrior classes that you will have to choose from. These are the Gunner, the Mage and the Archer. This does not end there, each one has 3 subclasses with a specialized form of attack and their own specific weapon types that can be modified, found or crafted. Placing these guys or gals on a tower will give the tower the specific attack capability be it a single one-by- one target attack or a specific area attack that hits all within that area.
You will have to make sure that the attacking wave or any enemies will not be able to reach the people in the village at the end of the path. Towers with the right attack combinations have to be strategically placed to avoid any monster from getting through. The game may look and feel easy but the horde will increase in waves and numbers as you level up and the tendency for them to somehow get past your tower gauntlet will get higher per wave.
Every time you win and complete a level, you earn and your stats and those of your men go up. This will allow you to have more access to the items, skills and things you need as you progress through the game. Note however that Heroes of The Banner is a huge game, maybe not the maps but considering it has over 60 different maps and you will need to survive 10 rounds for each, that would definitely take a lot to cover.
Also, each map has only a limited number of defense positions you can plunk your towers on. You will need to constantly update your heroes with their skills, equipment, weapons, their stats and hire some more as the need arises. Creating a good combination of attack capabilities is the trick to surviving the game.
Heroes of the Banner is free2play with micro-transaction options available if you would rather buy than earn your way through the game. It might get boring if you’re not really into tower defense strategy games but if you are, the added RPG aspect and the beautifully done and colorful graphics, music and sounds that pop-up every now and then give life to the game play and will get you involved and make you definitely want to complete the game.
