In a remarkable retelling of the tale of the Lost City of Atlantis, Wartide: Heroes of Atlantis puts you in command of a party of heroes who are looking for new places to live in after the fall of the city. Poseidon has decided to sink the city underwater following a civil war between two factions, in a bid to keep either from gaining control of Atlantis.
What remains now are shattered factions vying for control of available settlements. Cities have sprung, and each city now battles one another for living space and resources. You, the player, command one of these cities and under your wing are a group of warriors willing to fight for you in exchange for glory and the right to live in a roof.
In addition to its very compelling storyline, Wartide also boasts of a highly engaging battle system that should keep you on your toes. It’s a strategy MMO, which means that much of your success in battle depends on the strength of your heroes and their placement in the map. Aside from that, everything else is beyond your control as the battle system is 90% automatic.
There are four types of heroes in the game: Tank, Warrior, Archer and Healer. The Tank has very high HP and defense stats, which means that he or she is very good at shielding the Archer and Healer -- the rear units -- from attack. The Warrior has high offensive stats and HP that matches that of the Tank, and is best deployed in a position where he or she can flank the enemy.
Both Archer and Healer can deal ranged attacks. A Healer can both be an archer and a hero with healing abilities.
Once the battle commences, all you can do is watch how it proceeds until each Hero’s special ability is activated. This happens when a specific number of AP (ability points) are collected during battle. Each Hero requires a specific number of APs to activate his or her special ability, so use that knowledge as one of the factors to your strategy.
As you go through many battles, your heroes gain experience points and level up. They gain additional HP and other stats this way.
Each battle also gives loot at the end. These could either be runes that you use to upgrade and promote your heroes, so they gain new battle abilities. You might also gain keys that will open chests, which either give a new Hero or additional runes.
When you’ve reached a certain level, you can enter the Arena and challenge other players’ heroes.
Wartide boasts of cute yet very sharp graphics, just a little short of high-definition. The animations are smooth, and seamless, especially the special ability cut scenes.
