Start from a small underdeveloped province and grow it into a strong and massive kingdom. Produce and collect resources then recruit a variety of units into your army then crush your opponents and pillage the neighboring kingdoms.

Set in a medieval world, Imperia Online lets players take on the role of a Lord of an underdeveloped province. The player can develop the province by constructing and upgrading various economic, military and resource-generating buildings. You can also research new technologies in the university as well. Start recruiting and training military troops to attack other provinces to plunder their resources and as well as defend your province from attacks.

Players will be able to place their buildings wherever they choose or even relocate old ones as the game has a fully customizable city layout, which is unique to most browser based city building games. Changing the layout will not give a strategic advantage though as it is merely for cosmetic purposes.

Players will be constructing structures and upgrading them like most city building games but Imperia Online makes it easier since you will just need to go to your town hall and the building will just be automatically placed. Players will also need to build economic buildings in order to gather resources Imperia Online has a mining feature wherein players can just allocate some units to mine resources periodically without collecting them manually. Military buildings will need to be built in order to recruit units for attacking other provinces and defending your own. The game also has a population system that would limit the units that the player can recruit but the limit can be increased by upgrading the farms and granaries.

The combat system is automatic so no commands would be needed but the strategy comes in with the types of units and the number of units that a player has in his army. Each unit will determine the outcome of the battle as each would be weak versus a particular type of unit. Cavalry units would defeat Archer units and the swordsmen units most of the time. While Archer units would beat spearmen all the time and Spearmen will win against cavalry units all the time.

Winning a battle would allow players to siege on the loser’s fortress in order to gain military and honor points. Successful sieges will reward players with resources and as well the option to pillage the enemy village to gain gold.

The game also has premium items and benefits. Players can purchase diamonds to gain production boosts, instant building construction and instant research. You can also enter the Vacation mode in exchange for 10 diamonds to make your province immune to attacks. You can also purchase Great People which are Noblemen that can boost the province’s resource and troop production and as well as other abilities that can help you gain a unique advantage.

Imperia Online is a pretty good city building game with decent graphics. It has a good musical score which sets a quite serene ambiance. Diplomacy and negotiation seems to be a key mechanic in the game which sets it apart from most games of the genre. Overall, it is a game worth trying out. It is available on the browser and there is also a mobile version of it as well.
