Just because Imperial Conflict is a text-based game that uses a set of branching menus to facilitate its gameplay does not mean that it’s simple to play. This is one of the most long-standing, time-consuming, but immersive games on the internet today.
Imagine playing a space opera of a game with nothing but pictures, menus, and lots of text which will need you to do some serious strategic thinking and planning over the course of not just several months but years even. You will have to practically leave your game and actively come back every now and then to make your moves and manage your resources, that is, if you still want to have an existing empire when you log back on.
Do keep in mind that you will not find any awesome animation or immense soundtrack. You have to do all those in your head or maybe play some really cool music while having a cup of coffee while planning and executing your next move. Time runs a little slow in this game. So, if this is your cup of brewed, espresso, or tea, here are a few things that would be good to know before starting the game.
After you register at the site with your user name and password, you will have to start the game by choosing an available galaxy in which you will establish your new empire. Galaxies that are available to choose from will depend on the current state of the game. This is a running game that’s been up since 1999, so there will be changes from time to time. Examples of available galaxies would be our own Milky Way as well as the Starburst and SuperNova galaxies.
Once you’ve chosen a galaxy, you will then have to choose your race. There are currently 6 races available. They are the Partaxian which are Human Dreamweaver hybrids with immense psychic abilities who shun technology. Their abilities give them certain advantages which are good for Black Ops, Espionage, and resource procurement.
The Wardancers are mostly combination Human-Alien hybrids who want to possess both Magic and Technology and rule the galaxy. They are very aggressive and good for Assault. Quantum, on the other hand, is Scientific humans whose adherence to government and organized order is second to none. Very technologically oriented and the most efficient race, they consider themselves higher than the other races. They are good at everything.
The Camara is a fairly new race. This is a pirate race that is usually on the run and does not stay too long in one location. They specialize in Hit and Run tactics, get in, get the goodies, get out. Their ships are very fast, but the technology is not theirs. They are usually good for small to medium attacks. The Revalons are the richest race in resources and cash. A young trading race that dislikes war and would rather focus on growing their wealth throughout the galaxy. They usually hire other races to protect them. This is an equalitarian race where they believe that the riches of their entire clan should be shared equally between the members and their race. They want peace and prosperity and have little tolerance for fighting. Jedi mind tricks won't work on them, Only Money. Good in Banking, obviously.
Finally, the Qezians are a very dangerous race that occupies the SuperNova galaxy. This race cannot even get along with one another. Their technology is stolen as they lack creativity but are cunning to the max. They establish empires and go to war with their own race and others. They control SuperNova as their kind alone is the only one that can survive there. They are good at everything.
You will have to choose your race carefully. Imperial Conflict is a team-based strategy game, players or Empire leaders are assigned specific roles in the overall gameplay. This is when massive all-out family or clan wars erupt on a major scale for galactic domination, and each leader is obligated to fulfill one's task in the overall scheme. Joining a family or clan, so to speak, is a very important feature of the game. Your immediate family is your allies. These are composed of several rulers (members) like you. Most of the time, when you join, the clan already has an assigned leader who coordinates with the members and post messages to them.
Your family or clan will have enemy clans who have control of other planets. You can locate the planets they control on the Galactic Map. Be careful when attacking as some enemy leaders have already built up a massive empire of their own, and provoking them might get you wiped out instead.
Each race has special abilities or talents that a family will need for massive attack or defense purposes. Each member has a role, let’s start with the Banker Empire. These leaders are the financiers of the family. They specialize in making money and have 2 ways of doing it. They can be Cash Bankers who earn using factories and production or be Population Bankers who earn by growing populations and providing for their needs. In both instances, taxation will provide the needed cash for the family.
Attack Empires are the assault and defense forces of the clan. There are 2 types of Attacker Empires, Main Assault, and Support. Main Assault leaderships focus on the first line of Assault and Defense. These are the leaders who are active in logging into the game. They capture enemy planets and star systems for the family bankers and resources to use in order to expand the overall war effort. They are first in priority in receiving aid and resources as they have to build the most attack fleets.
Support Empires are the second line assist group in clearing enemy threats and bolstering the clan’s defenses. They deal with the small and medium-sized enemy attackers and likewise maintain small to medium fleets and prevent unwanted enemy intrusions. They also provide ground support to the Main Assault force during large planetary conquest and go after the bankers of targeted planets.
Resource Empires are tasked with supporting the family by acquiring resources and producing them into material immediately needed by the other clan empires. The 4 needed resources in the game are Endurium, Iron, Food, and Octarine. The resource empire must then focus on a particular production mode to support both the Bankers and the Attackers. Fleets need Iron to build, and likewise, Bankers need Iron to generate cash. Also, food will be a major priority as Pop Bankers will need to feed their ever-growing population. As such, the Resourcer must adjust the percentage of materials production with respect to the needs of the family.
Aside from resources, Resource Empires specialize in black ops sabotage and intelligence gathering. They deal with threats that can lead to a massive enemy attack. Agents and Wizards are sent to gather data on enemy positions, fleet size, resource production, and other pertinent information that can be used to turn the tide of war against them.
With that, you begin the game by viewing your Galactic Map, which is a 2D representation of your immediate Galaxy. Clicking on My System will show where your planet is. With this as a reference, you will be able to locate a star system close by with unexplored planets. The more closer the star system, the faster your ships can travel there. You will then be provided with a number of exploration ships that you can use to colonize such star systems. Send them as soon as possible as it takes time to do things in the game. Time is measured in weeks which translates to hours in real-life gameplay.
The game has a Build Military Units feature just in case you need more exploration vessels. Note however that exploration ships are quite expensive, so it is advised not to build more than you need. Once you are able to colonize planets, you can then proceed to the next phase, the gathering of resources. Unexplored planets start out empty with a trickle of a population. To harvest resources, you first start to build. Clicking on Planets (on the sidebar) will show the planets that are yours and let you access the build option. Start building structures for the immediate needs of your people like Hydroponic Farms. In time the population will grow, and so will resource collection. Depending on your role, you may then plan on attacking enemy planets for expansion or continue colonizing and gathering the needed resources.
Should you decide to take part in this galactic conquest, just remember that this is a long-term but immersive game. Most of the options are on the sidebar and make it a point to read all the important info that pops up on the screen. Imperial Conflict has always been free2play, but appreciative of any donation you can spare should you enjoy the game. For the conquest of the galaxy, happy gaming!
