With your commander’s squadron destroyed, you have been appointed as the next commander in chief in this brilliant MMORTS, War Conflict. Build up your army and conquer various locations around the campaign map or duke it out with another player. Design and fortify your base with a variety of artillery to defeat any player foolish enough to attack your base. Do you have what it takes to be victorious in this war?

Well, to find out you’ll need to be in the war in the first place. This means getting the game from either the AppStore or GooglePlay. After booting the game up, you’ll be guided through the game’s tutorial campaign whereby you’ll learn the basics like the game controls.

Since War Conflict is a mobile game, almost all the actions done in the game can be performed using taps. For instance, on a standard battle map, your troops will be deployed to specific starter bases. To move them, you’ll tap once to select half of the total troops you have in that base or tap twice to select all, and tap on the base you want them to head to. There are also some rules as to how your tanks and aircraft can move on the map. Tanks need to follow the paths on the map to move while aircraft and missiles can attack any base no matter where it is.

Each base you managed to conquer will automatically generate a certain type of unit, depending on which type of base it is, until the base is full. There are 3 types of bases in total and these bases can be differentiated from each other by the shape of the base itself: Tank base is hexagonal; aircraft hangar is circular and missile silo is triangular.

These 3 types of bases correspond to the game’s 3 types of military units, tanks, aircraft and missiles. Tanks and aircraft can be used to conquer bases, even bases of an opposing type, but missiles can only destroy the residing troops in a base – no conquering involved. Thus, it is wise to fire a missile at an enemy base and follow it up with tanks or aircraft. Interestingly, tanks are more efficient when used to attack aircraft bases while aircraft works better against tank bases. So, if you find it hard to capture a certain type of base, you might have better luck by using units that can counter the type of base you’re after.

As you play the game, you’ll notice that some bases are much harder to conquer than others. Some may possess on-site artillery like anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns, while others may simply have tougher defenses by having higher walls or armor. By strategizing carefully, you might be able to use other means to weaken the base defenses – hint: missiles for the win! - prior to attacking them with either your aircraft or tanks.

Most of your battles will be fought on War Conflict’s PvE campaign mode. There are many maps on offer with each of them containing several stages. Every stage in the game can be played at 3 difficulty levels, and the subsequent difficulties can only be unlocked if you’re victorious in the previous difficulty level. There are also missions from command as well as achievements that you can complete for extra cash.

For PvP, the game has a multiplayer mode called Assault where you’ll take on a randomly assigned player who is around your level. Unlike the campaign, you’ll be battling it out on the map of your opponent’s base that’s specially designed by your opponent himself. That said, every victory will earn you medals and the total medals earned will determine your rank on the Company of Heroes leaderboard. Climbing your way to the top of the list will not only net you amazing prizes but also move you forward to the next rank bracket.

However, the base-building aspect in War Conflict is pretty much the archetype of a standard MMORTS. In addition to resource collection and troop recruitment, you can upgrade your facilities to unlock new units and upgrade existing units. You can also switch to tactical view to design your base map and add in artillery to further fortify your bases against potential attacks by other players.

The visuals for the units and buildings in War Conflict are pretty detailed and well-done but the game environment does look a bit plain. The sound effects and music, on the other hand, are excellent when it comes to immersing the players into the game.

If you thought War Conflict is like “every other MMORTS games out there”, well, you’ll quickly realize that you’re dead wrong. The gameplay itself is incredibly refreshing and the game’s apparent simplicity may also fool quite a lot of players. However, players will soon realize that there are many factors in play, factors that they can utilize strategically to gain an advantage against their opponent, be it another player or the game itself.
